They can hear you!

Betta fish/ Siamese fighting fish have ‘Ears’!

Yes, their ears are not the same as our human ears, but are ears nonetheless.

Their ears are located behind the skin, near their eyes.

They look like a small opening. In fact they are ‘internal ears’. These are covered with sensory hairs that are designed to detect sound.

Your Siamese fighting fish hears via sound waves. When the sound moves through the water it makes vibrations. This vibration from the sound waves stimulates the skin and ears of your fish. In doing so, a fish uses it’s body to hear as well as it’s ‘internal ears’.

A fluid filled tube that is very sensitive to water pressure is called the ‘lateral line’. When the water pressure builds the ‘lateral line’ sensors react and build pressure in the organ and this causes the fish to ‘hear’ or react to the pressure.

Try never to tap on the tank of your Betta fish, because the sound waves are multiplied 5 times through the tank. Ouch, that will hurt!!
