BREEDING BABY SIAMESE FIGHTING FISH/ BETTA FISH! SIX STEPS!

Welcome to your Betta fish /Siamese fighting fish information blog! Free information about betta fish /siamese fighting fish and much more! Your home and pet home!

STEP 6.

A very exciting period will happen over the next two days or so.

Your male Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish will keep the eggs cleaned and see to it that the eggs stay in the nest.
He will recover any eggs that fall out and place them back in the nest.
Then you will see the babies!

About two days after they hatch the first babies or ‘fry’ as they are known, will begin to swim without help.

OK, so now is the time to remove your male Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish otherwise he will start to eat the babies.

When the babies hatch you will also need to feed them. Micro worms, baby brine shrimp or daphnia are a good choice, but you will have to feed them up to five times a day.

In ten days or so you can feed them a little powdered food, which is a small amount of finely crushed flake food.

At four weeks you should be able to tell males from females. You now have to separate the males from each other to avoid them fighting!

Females can be kept together!

Good luck!

I will be reviewing an excellent e-book on breeding Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish, so be on the lookout for that.

BREEDING BABY SIAMESE FIGHTING FISH/ BETTA FISH! SIX STEPS!

STEP 5

The crucial time has arrived. You must now place your female Siamese fighting fish /betta fish in the water with the male. Tense moments! There may be some rough treatment, maybe some fin nipping or even worse.

If you see it gets too rough then you must remove your female and wait for a few days, letting her recover.

When you see the male caressing the female with his fins and forcefully wrapping his tail around her body, then you should have success.

Your female Siamese fighting fish/ betta fish should then produce eggs under the bubble nest.

The male will then fertilize them and begin to take care of the eggs.

This is the time to remove your female otherwise she can become food for the male. She has done her job.

Click on ‘breeding information’. Below.

BREEDING BABY SIAMESE FIGHTING FISH/BETTA FISH! SIX STEPS!

STEP 4.

This is the time when you must observe what your Siamese fighting fish/betta fish are doing. They must seem to have recognized each other, and the male will make gestures while flashing his long fins around.

You should see the male’s tail making strong waving motions towards the female.

Your male Siamese fighting fish/betta fish should also start to create a bubble nest.

While doing all of this you must also feed your fish with high quality food.

There are different recommendations, some use freeze dried blood worms, some live or frozen brine shrimp, and others use tubifex worms and so on. Remember not to overfeed.

Now, after having the high quality food, your female Siamese fighting fish/ betta fish should sort of plump up as eggs are produced. She will now be ready.

BREEDING BABY SIAMESE FIGHTING FISH/ BETTA FISH! SIX STEPS!

Breeding betta fish/ Siamese fighting fish can be a very wonderful experience.

STEP 3

Having the right conditions in your fish tank is very important.

You can use purified water in your fish tank, but not tap water, as this contains minerals that can be harmful to your fish.

You can add an extremely small amount of aquarium salt, which helps to ward off disease and reduce stress without causing harm to your Siamese fighting fish/ betta fish.

Your fish tank temperature should be kept at around 82 degrees F or 26c and the PH around 7. The mating tank should contain about ten gallons.

You do not have to add much decorations or gravel, but you will need to have some large leafed aquarium live plants. See my blog on http://aquariumliveplants.blogspot.com/ The plants will provide a hiding place for your Siamese fighting fish/ betta fish female.

BREEDING BABY SIAMESE FIGHTING FISH/ BETTA FISH! SIX STEPS!

STEP 2

A difficulty which you may have right from the start is to find a female Siamese fighting fish/ betta fish. Not too many pet stores sell them.

When you do find one your next job is to obtain the right fish tank.

You do not want one of those fish bowl aquariums. Try and get a long rectangular fish tank that is designed for breeding Siamese fighting fish/betta fish.

I have been told that these fish tanks contain a slit down the middle which will separate the female from the male before they can start breeding.

Male Siamese fighting fish/ betta fish are very territorial and aggressive, so you must separate them in the beginning.

Do not place them in the same tank together.

Try and buy your fish that seem to have some energy. This will increase their chances of spawning. Tell your pet store owner or salesperson that you are hoping to breed and that you want your fish that are between seven and eighteen months old.

BREEDING BABY SIAMESE FIGHTING FISH/ BETTA FISH! SIX STEPS!

Welcome to Siamese fighting fish world. Siamese fighting fish/Betta fish owners can obtain free information to help with breeding Betta fish babies.

STEP 1

I have had some people ask me ‘how do I go about breeding with my Siamese fighting fish/betta fish’?

I have not tried this myself yet, but I have garnered a fair bit of information from different sources on how to go about breeding Siamese fighting fish/betta fish.

First and foremost you have to know the difference between a male and a female Siamese fighting fish/betta fish.

The male will have long and colorful fins, whereby the females are a bit more bland and their fins are much shorter. The females are also chubbier and shorter than the male.

Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish/ Illness! What do you do?

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

Your Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish should be very healthy and give you no trouble but lots of enjoyment. However, if they become ill then you must check and test your fish tank water first and foremost.

Water quality is the most important factor in having a healthy Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish.

You must test the temperature, ph, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate ingredients in your fish tank water regularly.

All the medicine in the world will not help if you have bad water.

Most problems in water have no color, smell or texture. You have to test it.

Changing your fish tank water every 4, 5, or 7 days should ensure the quality.

There are natural anti- bacterial remedies such as Melafix and others, as well as Pimafix for fungus. These can be used if your fish is ill, but have your fish tank water tested first.

A good idea is to have a separate hospital tank where you can place your ill Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish until he recovers.

Betta Imbellis The Peaceful betta!

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

The betta imbellis is a much more docile fish than your Siamese fighting fish and maybe a great alternative for those looking to have a community aquarium.

The peaceful betta though, is not as spectacular looking as your Siamese fighting fish.

In the wild the peaceful betta inhabit densely grown waters, so if you decide to keep some of these fish you must provide them with plenty of hiding places, by decorating your aquarium with lots of plants. Click on this link for info on the different plants.
http://aquariumliveplants.blogspot.com/

Remember, if your betta imbellis has no hiding places they will become extremely stressed!

Siamese fighting fish= ‘Ikan Betta’

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

What’s in a name? Well, ‘BETTA’, the word, comes from a local Siamese name for Siamese fighting fish. The contemporary Thai name for this fish is ‘Pla-kad’.

Those of you who do not want an aggressive Siamese fighting fish and would like an alternative could consider the ‘Betta imbellis’ or ‘peaceful betta’.

This ‘peaceful betta’ is native to Malaysia and can grow to a maximum size of 8cms. or 3inches.

When you compare the ‘peaceful betta’ to the Siamese fighting fish, it is much more docile and will do well in a community fish tank with other tranquil and non aggressive species.

Most desirable color for your Siamese fighting fish /Betta fish!

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

One of the most desirable colors to breed for your Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish is the ‘Black/ Melano!!

It is one of the hardest to find in its purist form.

The whole body and fins are ‘midnight black’ and look very beautiful!

The males are very fertile, but the females have a fertility problem.

If you cross a ‘melano’ male to a ‘steel blue’ female you will get a ‘black’ Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish.

The chances of obtaining or raising a fertile ‘true’ ‘melano’ female are astronomical! This can also be very profitable and make you a lot of money!

There are many other combinations of colors.

Three other solid colors for your Siamese fighting fish/Betta fish!

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish your Home and family and pets home.

When your Siamese fighting fish/Betta fish has an ‘oily pastel’ look to it, it is known as a ‘pastel’ color. Three main colors are ‘red, blue and green’.

The ‘Opaque’ color is when the whole fish has a milky ‘opaque’ color. It comes in ‘white’ only, and is very desirable in its purest form and has no ‘red’ wash.

The ‘black lace’ Siamese fighting fish/Betta fish is where the ‘black’ will have a more washed-out appearance. These fish are fertile and the ‘black lace is actually a ‘steel blue’ coloration.

With all the different tail types and colors you could have a lifetime hobby. Enjoy!

A ‘YELLOW’ Siamese fighting fish/Betta fish!!

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

The ‘yellow’ colored Siamese fighting fish/betta fish is a color which can range anywhere from an almost clear to a bright ‘butter-yellow’, which covers the whole body and fins.

The ‘cellophane’ color in its pure form is a very pale ‘yellow’. If you breed with this color it can increase finnage and body size. It doesn’t carry any color genes that would affect your reason for using it.

A very nice color and a desirable one to breed is the ‘chocolate’ colored Siamese fighting fish/betta fish.

This color is between ‘black and yellow’ and can be ‘dark brown’ to a ‘light brown’, almost ‘yellow’.

You also get the extended ‘Red’ in which the ‘red’ coloration extends past the gill plates and head.

‘Royal Blue’ is where the body and fins are a dark ‘royal blue’, ending at the gill plates.
The head is usually dark ‘grey-black’. ‘Red’ will be seen on the fins.

‘Turquoise’ colored Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish have a faded bright ‘green’ throughout the body ending at the gills and the head is that of a ‘blue’ betta (i.e. ‘greyish-black).

The ‘Steel blue’ color is where the body and fins have a light ‘grey-dark gunmetal blue’ color ending at the gills and head, which are the same as the ‘royal blue’.

Introducing!! A ‘CROWN TAIL’ Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish!

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

The ‘CROWN TAIL’ is one of the newest and most expensive of the tail types you can get!

Breeders of this tail type of Betta fish can expect big amounts of money for their fish!

The tail is highly frilled with extended spiny rays.

It shows the fins rays extending past the webbing of the fins.

You get a ‘single’ ray which extends past the webbing and then you get the ‘double’ ray which has each ray dividing into two rays at the webbing.

The ‘triple’ ray is a very rare find. The rays divide into three at the webbing.

The last one is a ‘double double’ ray and is very expensive!

Here you will find the rays divide into two at the webbing, and then each of the two split rays will divide into two again, looking like four rays. The number of rays is counted on the caudal fin only, as the dorsal and anal fins only have single rays coming off the webbing.

You can see this tail type in combination with ‘double tails’ and any of the ‘delta tails’ and ‘half moon’ types!

Two other types of tail are the ‘fantail’ which is a rounded ‘delta tail’ and a ‘short- finned fighting style tail’ which is sometimes called ‘plakat’!

As you can see, if you start breeding your Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish it can be very rewarding and very profitable.

'HALF MOON' Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish!!

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

‘HALF MOON’ Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish!

The ‘HALF MOON’ tail shape is a large tail fin that forms a 180 degree half circle.

The caudal fin spreads off the caudal peduncle at 160-180 degrees and the rays must be of even length. The anal fin on the ‘half moon’ is usually extended.

To find a ‘true’ ‘half moon’ Betta fish/ Siamese fighting fish is difficult and can be very expensive!

DELTA TAIL, Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish!!

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

Siamese Fighting Fish ‘Delta Tail’

You get three types of ‘DELTA TAIL’.

The first one is the ordinary ‘Delta Tail’ and this is where the tail is in the shape of a delta coming off of the caudal peduncle.

The spread is measured in degrees and varies from 50-70 degrees. The tail span is less than ‘half moon’ with sharp edges.

You also get the ‘super delta tail’ which is a wider form of the ‘delta tail’ and the spread of the caudal fin here is from70-120 degrees.

The third one is the ‘ultra delta tail’ which is an even more glorified version of the first one. Here the caudal fin spread can be between 120-160 degrees.

Many fascinating times once you really get into breeding your Siamese fighting fish.

'Double Tail' Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish!

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

A ‘Double Tail’ Betta fish!

The ‘DOUBLE TAIL’ Betta fish/ Siamese fighting fish is a very beautiful tail type.

The caudal fin is split in the middle, producing two caudal peduncles and what are referred to as tail lobes (fins).

True ‘double tails’ should have an even split right to the body and have two caudal peduncles. The dorsal fin on a ‘double tail’ is significantly elongated.

Sometimes breeders will combine the ‘double tail’ with any of the ‘delta tails’ or ‘half moon’ type tails.

Be careful of breeding ‘double tails’ to ‘double tails’ as this could produce fish with short bodies and spinal deformities, because of the twin caudal peduncles.

Siamese fighting fish. Different tail types!

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

Siamese Fighting Fish/ Betta Fish—Different Tail Types!

I have been asked if I could explain the different and various tail types of the Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish. So, over the next couple of posts I will tell you about the various types of tails that you can get when you buy your Siamese fighting fish.

The VEIL TAIL! As I have already said in one of my previous articles, the veil tail is what you would usually find in most pet stores and most homes.

This is the most common of the tail types.

The tail is long and thin and usually tapers to a point. It’s a non-symmetrical tail (only 2 rays)

The gene for the veil tail is dominant and is very hard to breed out of a line.

Our ‘Samurai’ is a veil tail Siamese fighting fish.

Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish have nostrils!!

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

Smell, touch and feel?

Your Betta fish/ Siamese fighting fish can smell! Most fish can smell!

Most fish have nostrils!

In these nostrils are sensors that can detect odors in the water and this sends signals to their brain.

You have probably heard or seen on TV that sharks can detect blood from other fish or humans, over long distances. Well, the same goes for your Siamese fighting fish.

Fish also use their sense of smell to detect the smell that females emit. This detection of the female scent is said to signal the ‘willingness’ to breed!

Touching and feeling things is done with sensory receptors that stimulate the senses of touch and feel. What your fish actually feels is not sure.

Our ‘Samurai’ often comes up to the top of the tank for what seems like a ‘cuddle’ when I put the tip of my finger in the water. Maybe it’s just to say ‘hello’.

Eye can see you!

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

Eye can see you incredibly well!!

Have you ever been diving or snorkeling, or to a very large aquarium?
Did you notice how the fish follow you with their eyes!

Well, your Betta fish/ Siamese fighting fish can see you incredibly well!

Due to the placing of their eyes on their body, fish see better than humans. Their peripheral viewing field is always 360 degrees with just a small blind spot.

Their eyes are similar to human’s eyes. They have a cornea, iris, retina and lens.
Their retina allows them to reflect light, and their lens can move back and forward, which allows them to see both far and near.

Their underwater vision allows them to see at great depth and distance.

This remarkable vision comes in handy because they are able to see any predators before they become lunch.

Your Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish can also see in color!

They can hear you!

Betta fish/ Siamese fighting fish have ‘Ears’!

Yes, their ears are not the same as our human ears, but are ears nonetheless.

Their ears are located behind the skin, near their eyes.

They look like a small opening. In fact they are ‘internal ears’. These are covered with sensory hairs that are designed to detect sound.

Your Siamese fighting fish hears via sound waves. When the sound moves through the water it makes vibrations. This vibration from the sound waves stimulates the skin and ears of your fish. In doing so, a fish uses it’s body to hear as well as it’s ‘internal ears’.

A fluid filled tube that is very sensitive to water pressure is called the ‘lateral line’. When the water pressure builds the ‘lateral line’ sensors react and build pressure in the organ and this causes the fish to ‘hear’ or react to the pressure.

Try never to tap on the tank of your Betta fish, because the sound waves are multiplied 5 times through the tank. Ouch, that will hurt!!

Urgent!! Danger! New fish tanks!

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

URGENT! DANGER! New fish tanks!

I have had numerous people tell me that their new fish has died, just a few days after bringing them home. These people have asked me if I may have an answer.

Yes I do!

New fish tanks can be very toxic to fish in the beginning. Your new tank has to be ‘cycled’ before you place your new Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish, Cory Catfish or African Dwarf Frog into the new tank.

Talking to your Siamese fighting fish/ Bettafish

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

Talking to your Siamese Fighting Fish/ Betta Fish. They have ‘Ears’!

I have done some talking and then some to ‘Samurai’ this week I can tell you!

Most people will know how stressful it is when you are having renovations done. Especially when you have to check everything the workers are doing all of the time. They do not seem to listen to you properly and the next thing you find that they have done it wrong or that they have broken something. Then they have to redo it correctly and have wasted your time and money.

I think builders and painters should be on the receiving end, and only then will they realize what it feels like when it happens to them.

Anyway, I have done much cursing and swearing mostly, trying to let ‘Samurai’ our Siamese fighting fish, know how I feel and to get all the stress out. Not at him, but just to have someone who will listen to what I say. ‘Samurai’ seems to sympathize with me, so all is well, thank goodness.

All the work is almost finished and then I can get back to posting more often.

Wonderful companion

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

The African Dwarf Frog that I spoke of earlier makes a great pet for the beginner. It is a good choice if you want a companion for your Siamese fighting fish.

You can feed them 'freeze dried bloodworms.' Buy a package and keep it in the freezer. This can last anything from one to two months.

Remember they search for food by smell not movement!

They can also jump out of your tank, just like your Siamese fighting fish, so keep a lid on with air holes, the same as you would with your Siamese fighting fish.

The temperature should be more or less the same as for your fish.

The African Dwarf Frog is fairly active and can apparently “sing”.
They grow to about 1.5 inches in length. Females are slightly bigger than males.
They are native to Sub Saharan Africa.

Do not confuse them with African Clawed Frogs!! They may eat your Siamese fighting fish!

The KEY to your Success in keeping Siamese Fighting Fish

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

I must go back to the other articles and posts in which I have always suggested that you get your tank set up first. That means have the right placement for your tank, have the right plants for your tank, and make sure the water temperature is perfect. If you are going to have companions for your Siamese fighting fish, then get them before you buy your fish.
Planning everything beforehand is the key to success in keeping your Siamese fighting fish. Do not rush, start slowly and you will be rewarded with a marvelous, wonderful pastime for years to come. They are truly amazing pets.

Grandkids and Siamese fighting fish

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

Wow! The grandkids were over for the weekend and there was much excitement for us as well as 'SAMURAI'. He loves to see new faces and there was much interaction. They are fascinated with him and spent hours watching him swim up and down and doing his tricks.

Too soon it was all over and then the worry about this week and the painters again. Not much time to write posts.

Stress and relaxing with your Siamese fighting fish.

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

Well, I must tell you that the last week has been very stressful here. We have had builders, painters and all sorts busy with an upgrade to our building. They have had to cope with lousy weather, rain and more rain everyday, not that I complain about the rain, but when you need them to paint and it's mostly on the outside, then you have problems. It's nothing but stop start all the time. Things just cannot get done. Now they have to come back again the whole of next week and maybe longer.

Trying to take time off everyday to supervise is very stressful. This is where my little Siamese fighting fish, 'Samurai' comes in very handy. Just to sit down at the end of the day and say 'hello' to him and to watch him swim up to the window also saying 'hello' washes away all the stress of the day. I told you in my first article how relaxing it would be to have your Siamese fighting fish/ Betta fish to come home to. He has improved our quality of life.

I will be letting you know of further developments on the building.

Fascinating facts about your Siamese fighting fish

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

We often watch our ‘SAMURAI’ after hours or late at night and we noticed that he yawns at night. He opens his mouth and makes the same yawning motions that we do.
Our ‘SAMURAI’ then seems to lounge and then go to sleep. Yes, he goes to sleep.
Do you know that all living animals must sleep to survive! With fish, they tend to float, slow down or hover in one spot and look like they are dead.
Tropical fish, like the Siamese fighting fish, seem to have the same sleep cycle as humans. They sleep at night and move around during the day.

If you have a Siamese fighting fish or Betta fish as they are called in America, then watch carefully at nighttime and you will see them going to sleep, perhaps even a yawn or two beforehand.

Bronze Catfish as Siamese Fighter Companion

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

One of the best companions for your Siamese fighting fish seems to be the Bronze Catfish or Corydoras Aeneus. They can be extremely playful, scurrying around the bottom of your tank looking for food. They are very peaceful and should get on well with your Siamese fighting fish.

They come up for air occasionally and are daylight feeders. They live in groups and are highly recommended for beginners that want to keep Bettafish.

Corydoras catfish are native to the Amazon basin in South America, but many are bred in Florida in the U.S.A.

Once you get started with your Siamese fighting fish you will see how quickly you will get infected. If you begin slowly and plan beforehand, you will be rewarded with lots of fun and enjoyment from your Siamese fighting fish for years to come.

Corycats as companions for your Siamese fighting fish

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

If you really want companions for your Siamese fighting fish, I think the Cory Catfish seem to be your best bet. There are numerous types of Corydoras. You can get the Peppered Corydoras which are hardy and can grow to 4 inches. The Leopard Catfish, which is also hardy, and good for beginners.

Two other Cory catfish to consider are the Pygmy Cory and the Panda Cory. Although the Panda Cory is more sensitive to water conditions, they are a peaceful schooling fish that should be kept in groups of six or more. They are small in size so can be intimidated by your Siamese fighting fish.

The Best Bettafish Companions

A few other tank mates for your Siamese fighting fish could be Platies or Moons, Rasbora’s, Otocinclus, or the White cloud Mountain Minnow which originates in Southern China. Most of these would need to be in groups of 3 or 4 or more. Others could be Loaches or Shrimp.

The African Dwarf Frog is one of the species that some people keep successfully with their Siamese fighting fish. In later posts I will go into more details on this one.

Companions for your Siamese fighting fish

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

One of the things I have heard from a lot of people who have Siamese fighting fish also called Bettafish, is their desire to introduce a bettafish companion for their fish. I have researched this very topic and over the next few posts I will give you some of recommended types of fish that would be compatible with your Siamese fighting fish.

As you know, it’s difficult to just place any type of fish with a Siamese fighting fish. Remember, in the wild they are loners, and only come together with a female to mate and raise babies and then are on their own again.

OK, so the first one is the Cherry barb or Puntius Titteya and they originated in Sri Lanka. They can grow to 2 ins (4-5cm) and live on average 4 years. They prefer densely planted tanks with some clear swimming space. You will need a group of 6 or more.

The other barb is the Gold barb which was originally found in S.E. Asia. All of them now come from fish farms. They are very easy to keep. You do not need a heater, but they must have clean water. Usually the number to buy is 3 or more. A beautiful gold color, it is very hardy and active. They may tend to nip at your plants, so be careful if your tank is sparsely populated with plants. They may also nip at the fins of your Siamese fighting fish!!!

Final Say on Siamese Plants

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

I hope I have not gone on too much about live plants in the last couple of posts? It has taken quite a lot of research to try and find out which of the live plants would suit beginners and others. The plants that I have suggested should be alright to use for your Siamese fighting fish tank. You do not have to use all of them, but you can choose one or more for your tank. Try the easiest first and then add one or two others.

More Favorite Plants for Siamese Fighters

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

Most of the favorite live plants that you would decorate your Siamese fighting fish tank with should be placed before you buy your fish. As I have said, plan and have everything ready. Have your tank, the water and plants settled a few days before you go out to buy your Siamese fighting fish.

Hygrophila Polysperma is another easy to grow favorite bettafish plant, but needs bright light. The dwarf hygrophila is really popular. It is fast growing with good light. Plant it at the back of your tank.

Hygrophila Difformis or water wisteria is another attractive plant. It can be used as a back, middle or foreground plant. It grows better in medium to higher lighting, but can be grown in somewhat low lighting also. It does attract algae, so may be not for a new tank.

Live Plants Bettafish love

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

So, I have done a lot of talking about live plants for your Siamese fighting fish tank. I feel that it is best to have live plants in your tank. The Bettafish will love you for it too! Some people may only put in plastic plants, which I do not recommend. I would rather have silk plants which will not damage your Siamese fighting fish. Live plants are much better for Bettafish. They will bring so much more life into your tank, as well as get rid of many unwanted material. All the better for your bettafish.

Other plants that you could consider would be Hornwort, Elodea, and Cryptocorynes. The latter includes the popular species from Sri Lanka= C.Wendtii, C. Walkeri and from Thailand the C. Cordata “Blassii”. Usually these bettafish plants prefer low light.

Enhance Your Bettafish Tank with these plants

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

Water Sprite—Ceratopteris Cornuta has bright yellowish green leaves that can be quite decorative. It can grow as a floating plant on the water surface or rooted in gravel. If you grow it as a floating plant it will provide surface cover and make your Siamese fighting fish feel more secure and less “jumpy”. You may find that your Siamese fighting fish may also use the water sprite as a platform to bask himself in the warmth of your aquarium light if you have one, much the same as sunbathing for us. A wonderful plant when you start breeding your Siamese fighting fish, the babies will have protective cover and the adults a platform for a bubble nest!

Plants that Bettafish Love

Welcome to the world of the Siamese Fighting Fish. Free tips about keeping Siamese fighting fish. Lots of Siamese fighting fish news and much much more on Siamese fighting fish, your Home and family pet’s home.

More information on live plants for your Siamese fighting fish tank. I think one of the best live plants is the Java fern or microsorium pteropus. It is easy to grow and most need low to medium light. It is a beautiful plant and does well in poorly lit tanks.

You can plant them singly or in groups if your tank has enough room. Attach them to a rock or a piece of driftwood with a thin wire, rubber band or fishing line until new anchor roots have formed. Do not plant them directly into the substrate. You will find a number of varieties. You get the Red java fern, the lace java fern, also the Philippine java fern which is very easy to grow. All in all the Java fern is a wonderful plant to enhance your Siamese fighting fish tank.

Great for beginners and others. More on plants bettafish love...

I have heard that some pet stores sell what they call “ BettaFish Bulbs” for your Siamese fighting fish. They are actually Rhizomes or Aponogeton. They grow well in low light and are attractive. With these plants or bulbs, they do well in soft water, so you will have to check your water. Go to Google search and look for “Betta bulbs” for more information.
